“For decades, faculty have critiqued assessment methods that prioritize memorization and formulaic responses over deeper learning. The emergence of sophisticated AI tools has transformed this critique from a theoretical ideal into an immediate practical necessity.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools have fundamentally disrupted traditional notions of assessment in education. We must shift from measuring rote knowledge to promoting and evaluating higher-order thinking, reasoning, and metacognition.

This session engages the audience in a dialogue on the future of assessment in the age of AI. Drawing on her teaching experience and research, Professor Qi highlights three key directions for rethinking assessment: (1) shifting from outcome-focused to process-oriented evaluation; (2) emphasizing assessment through dialogue and intellectual defense, where students articulate their understanding, explain their reasoning, respond to unanticipated questions, and defend their conclusions in real time; and (3) designing assessments around complex and authentic problems.

Prof. Huihui Qi
Associate Teaching Professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of California-San Diego, USA
Dr. Qi’s research in engineering education explores evidence-based pedagogies to improve students’ conceptual understanding, knowledge transfer, and problem-solving, alongside interventions that strengthen self-regulated learning through growth mindset, metacognition, and effective learning strategies. She leads diverse interdisciplinary teams on multiple educational innovation and research projects, including National Science Foundation-funded initiatives on oral exams and course-integrated interventions to promote self-regulated learning. As a thoughtful and insightful educator and educational researcher, Dr. Qi has received numerous awards including the recent ASEE Mechanics Division Archie Higdon Distinguished Educator Award , UC San Diego Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching (2025), ASEE Mechanics Division Best Paper Award, and UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering Best Teacher Award. Professor Qi and her team’s educational research work has been highlighted in various press releases, including the Wall Street Journal, Associate Press News, ABC news, EdSurge, and UC San Diego Today.
