第1期午餐会(总第115期):Attributes Of An Effective Teacher And A Successful Researcher【报名截止】

内容简介

Faculty members at research universities around the world are evaluated in three areas for their tenure and promotion as well as for merit. These areas are: (1) teaching, (2) research, and (3) professional service. While teaching and research are considered more seriously, professional service is encouraged and it is an obligation of every faculty member to serve in ways that benefits others in the community. In this lecture the experience and thoughts on teaching and research are discussed and some advice is provided. What the speaker says only reflects his personal views on teaching and research aspects of being a (successful) faculty member. He will be speaking on these topics from his own experience as a university faculty member for about 45 years. The statements and advice given neither represents necessarily the views of the university he comes from nor the university that is hosting, although most would agree that these are the norms of most academic institutions. Also, your attendance at this meeting is optional but the participation may help you professionally.

主讲人简介

Dr. Reddy, the Oscar S Wyatt Endowed Chair Professor, Distinguished Professor, and Regents Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, is a highly-cited researcher with h-index of 100 (as per Google Scholar), author of 21 textbooks and over 620 journal papers, and a leader in the applied mechanics field for more than 40 years. Dr. Reddy has been a member of Texas A&M faculty since 1992.

Reddy is known worldwide for his significant contributions to the field of applied mechanics through the authorship of widely used textbooks on the linear and nonlinear finite element analysis, variational methods, composite materials and structures, and continuum mechanics. His pioneering works on the development of shear deformation theories (that bear his name in the literature as the Reddy third-order plate theory and the Reddy layerwise theory) have had a major impact and have led to new research developments and applications.

His earlier research focused primarily on mathematics of finite elements, variational principles of mechanics, shear deformation and layerwise theories  of laminated composite plates and shells, analysis of bimodular materials, modeling of geological and geophysical phenomena, penalty finite elements for flows of viscous incompressible fluids, least-squares finite element models of fluid flows and solid continua. Some of the ideas on shear deformation theories and penalty finite element models of fluid flows have been implemented into commercial finite element computer programs like ABAQUS, NISA, and HyperXtrude.

In recent years, Reddy's research deals with 7- and 12-parameter shell theories, nonlocal and non-classical continuum mechanics problems, and problems involving couple stresses (i,e, the development of nonlocal beam and plate theories using the ideas of Eringen, Mindlin, Koiter, and others), surface stress effects, discrete fracture and flow, micropolar cohesive damage, and continuum plasticity of metals from considerations of non-equilibrium thermodynamics - as they appear in blood flow, bones, and materials with hard inclusions and phases.

Recent Honors include: 2016 Prager Medal, Society of Engineering Science, 2016 Thomson Reuters IP and Science’s Web of Science Highly Cited Researchers - Most Influential Minds, and  the 2016 ASME Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the 2017 John von Neumann Medal from the US Association of Computational Mechanics, and the 2018 Theodore von Karman Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is a member US National Academy of Engineering and foreign fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and the Brazilian National Academy of Engineering.
