Promoting Student's Motivation and Engagement: a Multidisciplinary Approach
2022/12/13 14:00 - 2022/12/13 15:30
504 Chen Ruiqiu Building and Tencent Meeting

活动简介

Modern teaching methods focus a lot on the student performance. We try to make them interact, to work in groups, to communicate with each other. We think that professors should first of all set an example, and learn to interact, to work in groups and to communicate with each other. Regardless of the methods chosen, the main problem remains the motivation of the students to engage in the classes. For example, one of the common questions they ask is "What is the purpose of learning all this?" By making the connection between courses with a clearer purpose and those with a less obvious purpose (this is a major problem in teaching mathematics to future engineers, for example), professors motivate students to be involved in these more abstract courses. We are going to present some examples of these productive collaborations.

Professor of Mathematics and coordinator of the team of Mathematics and Computer Science in SPEIT
An alumnus of the prestigious École Normale de la rue d'Ulm, he has taught in the best preparatory classes in France for more than 40 years and was a member of the founding team of SPEIT in 2012. He has contributed extensively to the development of the institute's Mathematics curriculum. Prof. Chillès was honoree in 2017 for SJTU's Excellence in Teaching Award. In addition to the academic background, he has worked as an engineer in a design office of Alstom, which provides a valuable link between the teaching of Mathematics and its use in the world of engineering.
XIA Meng
Assistant professor in the Physics and Chemistry team in SPEIT
She teaches physical chemistry, electromagnetism and other courses of undergraduate students. She received excellence award in SJTU’s Teaching Competition for Young Teachers in 2020 and first-prize in SPEIT’s Teaching Innovation Competition in 2021. Dr. Xia received her Ph.D. from CentraleSupélec, Paris-Saclay, France. Her research interests are in computational fluid dynamics and multiphase flows.
